Want to feel good about what you wear? Me too. This summer I stumbled upon a Canadian start-up called Altruist Apparel, founded by a super smart entrepreneur named Amy Eaton. Great name, Amy!
After working as children's mental health worker, Amy realized she was an entrepreneur at heart and began brainstorming creative ways to give back while making a living. She's always been passionate about women's issues and social justice, so she put her photography and graphic design skills to work and Altruist Apparel was born this May.
Here's a sampling of Altruist's designs:
I caught up with Amy to dig deeper and find out more about her brand.
AMYIN613: Hey Amy! Tell me about your vision for your brand new company.
AMY EATON: Altruist Apparel believes in wellness and empowerment for women all over the world. Our designs are words, phrases, and symbols that invoke fire within the female spirit. Through our clothing and accessories for women, girls, and babies we seek to promote strength, resiliency, and compassion in women and girls here at home.
AMYIN613: I love that. As someone who's certainly felt anxious stepping into a change room or searching for a new outfit, I love that you've made women's clothing empowering and uplifting. Beyond the clothes themselves, is Altruist doing anything else to support women?
AMY EATON: Absolutely. Across the globe we seek to help women and girls by donating a portion of our proceeds to organizations that help women and girls in developing countries have safe access to education, health care, and living conditions. We're currently focusing our fundraising efforts on Plan International’s Because I am a Girl project, and 15% of all our profits go directly to them.
AMYIN613: Fantastic. And where are your pieces made?
AMY EATON: Our whole line is ethically made, either in North America or internationally by companies who embrace social responsibility by providing their workers with fair wages and safe working conditions. We ship worldwide to all countries except of Cuba, Iran, and North Korea.
