This week a pretty extraordinary live event arrives at the National Arts Centre: Cirque de la Symphonie. What is it exactly? Think acrobats and aerial performers with a live soundtrack by the NAC Orchestra. Pretty neat eh? I'm the first to admit I'm a newbie when it comes to the orchestra (and classical music in general), but this makes it super accessible.
My mind's usually doing fourteen different things at once (I blame my phone and all my other devices), so having visuals to focus on during a classical performance is a big help. Do you find that too?
I recently went to the NAC's Casual Fridays for the first time, and the second half of the performance incorporated digital artwork created in real time, based on the movements of the conductor's left and right hands. So interesting. Though the soloist who performed during the first half of the evening was brilliant, I found it much easier to focus and enjoy the second portion of the evening thanks to the visual element. So I'm excited to go back for another performance that adds another layer to the orchestra.
From Thursday June 23 through Saturday June 25, Cirque de Symphonie returns to the NAC by popular demand. They've created breathtaking new acts for this year's edition of the show, so we can all take in circus feats while enjoying the NAC Orchestra’s renditions of Strauss, Tchaikovsky and other classics. I'm going on Thursday night, so on Friday I'll post a little update with my thoughts on the show.
