This Sunday May 8, Little Italy will be transformed from a busy main street to a paradise for bikes! The bike path that runs parallel to Preston Street and the O-train tracks has been upgraded beautifully, and the neighbourhood is celebrating with its first ever CycloFest.
From 10am to 2pm this Sunday, Preston Street will be closed to cars and anything else on wheels can take over: bikes, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, you name it. And of course you can use your own two feet too. Mayor Jim Watson and Somerset Ward Councillor Catherine McKenney (she's my councillor!) will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10am, followed by a decorated bike parade led by my friend Zara of XO VELO.
Even if you don't know Zara you've probably spotted her around town on her rainbow coloured bike. You'll know her when you see her! She'll be the one dressed in clothing that's as bright as her bike. Love that girl.
Now, as I mentioned, this is a decorated bike parade and it also just happens to be Mother's Day, so take mom to Preston and bring along some balloons and pretty posies to help her decorate her ride! If you'd like to join in the parade, meet at the Little Italy arch at 10am and Zara will lead the way.
Here's some bike inspo for you -- thanks to the ladies of Vincent for this shot!
The rest of the day will feature bike polo demonstrations, a bike rodeo, an outdoor yoga class, scootering, and more. And you can even pop by Pub Italia and enter a draw to win a new bike!
This is a family-friendly event so rest assured that there will be plenty to keep the kiddos busy :)
CycloFest is free and all are welcome. This is my 'hood so I'll see you there!
